Chapter Ten

Maggie left Myra at the donut shop when she closed up for the day. Despite the flooding outside of town, they were determined to see the festivities through for the coming holiday. Myra had the donut shop’s Valentine’s Day plans well in hand.

Her next stop was the grocery store. She aimed to stock up on a few things for at home and work. Fortunately, the donut shop was pretty well-stocked for the time being. They needed a few things, but nothing that couldn’t be picked up at the store. It would be more expensive that way, but better than nothing.

At the grocery store, Maggie was grateful she had changed into her rubber boots. Water was pounding all over the parking lot. She ran toward the door to escape the downpour. The store was fairly crowded. She pulled a cart from the front of the store and headed straight for the produce section.

A few moments later, with her cart half-full, Maggie decided to pick up a few treats for herself at home. She headed for the freezer section to look over the cheesecake options. After selecting a variety of cheesecake bites, she decided to stock up on wine as well. Chances were, she might have company on one or more nights, given the flooding situation. If Passway Road eventually did become blocked, Maggie planned to invite Ruby to stay in her spare bedroom.

Of course, it would take a major emergency for Ruby to leave her farm animals alone. Even so, she placed a bottle of Moscato and two sweet red wines in her cart for good measure.

“Wow, cheesecake bites and three bottles of wine,” a voice called behind her. “I wish I had the guts to let myself go that much. I don’t remember the last time I indulged in so many carbs.”

Maggie turned to see Lexi less than a cart length away from her. She held a small shopping basket over her arm.

Maggie glanced down at her stained work pants, tucked inside thick rubber boots that almost hit her knees. Her large, unzipped raincoat spread out to the side like an opened tent. She could feel the strands of her hair wisping about her face that had escaped the clip on the back of her head. Lexi looked like she had just come from a glamorous photoshoot. The hem of her cream-colored cigarette pants skimmed a pair of black suede ankle boots. She wore a navy blue silk blouse and nothing over it. Maggie almost asked her how she had escaped water stains on the expensive-looking shirt.

“You had plenty of carbs at my donut shop yesterday,” Maggie shot back. Lexi’s words soured her mood instantly.

Lexi covered her chest with her free hand. “You don’t care much about the impression you leave on your customers, do you?” she asked. “I don’t think I’ll be returning to your place of business if that’s the way you’re going to speak to me.”

Maggie swallowed hard. She wanted to reach up and smack the basket off of the woman’s arm but decided she needed to dial her sassiness back a bit.
